Description
These crispy angel cake churro bites are delightful, sweet treats perfect for any occasion. Made from store-bought or homemade angel food cake, they are fried to a golden finish and coated in cinnamon sugar.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 store-bought angel food cake (or homemade), cut into bite-sized cubes
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- Neutral oil (for frying – such as canola or vegetable oil)
Instructions
- Cut the Cake: Start by slicing your angel food cake into small, evenly sized cubes—about 1 to 1 inches each. If the cake is a day or two old, even better! Slightly dried-out cake holds its shape better when frying.
- Mix the Cinnamon Sugar: In a shallow bowl, stir together the sugar and cinnamon until well combined. This will be your churro coating.
- Heat the Oil: Pour about 2 inches of neutral oil into a heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet. Heat over medium heat until the oil reaches 350°F (you can use a kitchen thermometer for accuracy, but a small test cube should sizzle gently).
- Fry the Cake Bites: Working in small batches, gently drop the cake cubes into the hot oil. Fry for 30–45 seconds per side or until they’re golden and crispy. They cook quickly, so keep an eye on them to avoid burning.
- Drain and Coat: Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried bites to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. While they’re still warm, roll them generously in the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat every side.
- Serve Warm: Serve your crispy angel cake churro bites while they’re still warm for the best texture and flavor. They’re perfect on their own, or dipped in chocolate sauce, caramel, or whipped cream.
Notes
- These churro bites are best served immediately while warm and crispy.
