Description
A delightful Southern dessert made with ripe bananas and a buttery, tender crust.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 ripe bananas, sliced
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the melted butter into a 9×13-inch baking dish, making sure it coats the bottom evenly. My grandmother always said the butter is what gives the cobbler its rich, golden edges.
- Layer the sliced bananas evenly over the melted butter. As they bake, they’ll soften and caramelize, creating that sweet, almost custard-like filling.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth. The batter will be thin, and that’s exactly how it should be.
- Carefully pour the batter over the bananas. Do not stir. This is the magic of Southern Banana Cobbler—the batter will rise and form a tender crust as it bakes.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and set. The edges should be bubbling, and your kitchen will smell like sweet banana bread and warm vanilla.
- Let it cool slightly before serving. It thickens as it rests, making it easier to scoop.
Notes
- For best results, use ripe bananas that are heavily freckled.
- Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream for added indulgence.
